- Story Text: Filipino Catholics in Manila were elated on Sunday (March 23) with the news that Pope Francis will be discharged from the hospital after battling double pneumonia for more than five weeks.
Francis, 88, was admitted to Rome's Gemelli hospital on February 14 with a severe respiratory infection that became the most serious health crisis of his 12-year papacy. According to his medical team, he will continue with oral therapies and require a further two months of rest at the Vatican.
Roman Catholics comprise up to 85% of the Philippine population of over 110 million, making it the religion's stronghold in Asia.
In 2015, Francis travelled to the Philippines to visit victims of typhoon Haiyan in 2013 and held a mass which was attended by millions of Catholic devotees.
