- Story Text: Indian student organisations protested against the National Education Policy 2020, the new draft rules of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and paper leaks in New Delhi on Monday (March 24).
The protest, led by 'National Students' Union of India' and 'All India Students Association', comes in the wake of the language row in India's southern states, where the opposition leaders believe that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's implementation of the National Education Policy 2020 will impose the Hindi language over the southern regional languages.
Leader of main opposition Congress party Rahul Gandhi also joined the protesting students at Jantar Mantar protest site.
"The country's prime minister is silent on issues like unemployment, inflation and education system and that the opposition will unitedly fight against this," Gandhi said.
The new set of draft regulations put out by the UGC, allows the centrally appointed state governors to select and appoint Vice Chancellors of various central universities.
The opposition believes that by doing so, the BJP aims to increase its influence in the country's educational institutions. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
