- Story Text: Spring is finally approaching in Japan, with cherry blossoms beginning to bloom in one of Tokyo's most famous spots, Ueno Park, on Friday (March 28).
Tourists and residents have been gathering at the park to admire the blossoms and spend time with friends and family for "hanami," the Japanese tradition of cherry blossom viewing where people enjoy picnics and drinks under the blooming trees to celebrate the start of a new year for business or school.
For many, it's a special time to come together on one of the first warm days of the year. For tourists, it's a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience a unique part of Japanese culture.
"I think it's incredible that the whole country would come out to celebrate these beautiful flowers and those trees and this new season," said 49-year-old American tourist Stephanie Myers-Ham from California, who is visiting Japan with her husband.
With bad weather and heavy rain expected in the coming days, the cherry blossom season may once again be cut short, making today all the more special for visitors to the park.
In recent years, major changes in cherry blossom patterns due to climate change have raised concerns among the Japanese population.
