- Story Text: More than two million captagon pills have been seized by Kurdish internal security forces in northeastern Syria on Monday (March 24).
In a news conference in Qamishli on Tuesday (March 25), Colonel Mahmoud al-Hussein from the Kurdish internal security forces, said that two people were arrested with two million and 765 thousand captagon pills in their possession.
"There were specific targets and some information received by our forces that some drug dealers who had previously worked with the regime (of ousted Syria's Bashar al-Assad) and were working for some neighboring countries were transporting these substances and when they entered the areas of northern and eastern Syria, our forces were fully prepared for them", Hussein added.
Western anti-narcotics officials say the addictive, amphetamine-type stimulant known as captagon has for years been mass-produced in Syria.
Captagon - a mix of amphetamines also known as the "poor man’s cocaine" - is one of the more popular recreational drugs among affluent youth in the Middle East.
