- Story Text: Anti-government protests in Istanbul continued into the night on Tuesday (March 25) as protesters vowed to keep up demonstrations against the jailing of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.
At the main nightly protest a few hundred demonstrators chanted and faced off with hundreds of white-helmeted riot police.
On Tuesday, speaking to a group of young people at a Ramadan fast-breaking meal, President Tayyip Erdogan urged patience and common sense amid what he described as "very sensitive days."
Turkish authorities detained Imamoglu last Wednesday (March 19), Erdogan's main political rival, on charges of corruption and aiding a terrorist group in what the main opposition party has called "a coup against our next president".
The move prompted protests and outcry from opposition and government critics.
