- Story Text: March 26 marks twenty-five years since Vladimir Putin was first elected as Russian president. Putin was named acting president on Dec. 31, 1999, by then-president Boris Yeltsin.
Putin has been in office as president or prime minister ever since, a period now spanning more than 25 years.
Reuters interviewed veteran politician Grigory Yavlinsky, the leader of Russia's liberal Yabloko party who has known Putin since the 90s and ran against him for the presidency two times, coming up third in 2000.
Yavlinksy speaks about Putin, his beliefs, his transformation over the years, about Ukraine and the current talks over a ceasefire and Putin’s negotiating style. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
