- Story Text: Asian shares skidded on Thursday (March 27), tracking Wall Street overnight after U.S. President Donald Trump announced new tariffs on all auto imports, ratcheting up a global trade war that risks fuelling inflation.
Japan's Nikkei fell 1.2%, led by heavy losses in automakers.
South Korea's KOSPI dropped 0.7%.
Japanese and South Korean automakers have a big presence in the U.S. market.
Trump late on Wednesday (March 26) announced plans for long-promised 25% tariffs on automotive imports that are set to go into effect next Wednesday (April 2). However, he said planned reciprocal tariffs on all countries will be "lenient".
