- Story Text: As Muslims across the world prepared for Eid al-Fitr marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, a family in Gaza’s Khan Younis said there is no mood for celebration.
With several members of their family killed and their house destroyed during the 17 months of conflict, 30-year-old Palestinian, Amani Awwad and her husband, 38-year-old Saeed Abu Obaid, said there is no Eid atmosphere this year, adding that celebrations are 'for those who are living' while they feel like they do not have a life anymore.
With their three young children by their side, the couple sat in their house which was partially destroyed during the war, with Ramadan decorations amongst other belongings buried under rubble and debris.
More than 50,000 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli campaign in Gaza, Palestinian officials say.
It was launched after thousands of Hamas-led gunmen attacked communities in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and abducting 251 as hostages, according to Israeli tallies.
Much of the narrow coastal enclave has been reduced to rubble, leaving hundreds of thousands of people sheltering in tents or bombed-out buildings.
Surrounded by rubble and destruction in his neighbourhood, Obaid recalled previous Eid festivities, making sweets, family gatherings, and purchasing new clothes for their children during the holiday.
This year he said, there is no will or means to mark this special occasion.
