- Story Text: Shares in some of the world's largest auto companies tumbled on Thursday (March 27) after President Donald Trump put a wall of tariffs around the U.S. vehicle sector, adding to worries about the hit to global trade and to industry profits.
Trump said 25% tariffs on imported cars and light trucks would begin on April 3.
According to the head of the Center of Automotive Management (CAM), Stefan Bratzel, the car industry in Germany will suffer considerably from the tariffs.
"Around 450,000 vehicles are exported to the USA. Volkswagen is particularly affected because only 20% of the vehicles it sells in the USA are actually produced there. A lot is produced in Mexico, the rest is exported from Europe”, Bratzel told Reuters, adding that more value creation will have to move to the USA and other markets will have to be explored, such as India and Africa.
Almost half of the 16 million cars sold in the U.S. last year were imported, with a total value exceeding $330 billion, Goldman Sachs analysts said.
