- Story Text: Residents of an Istanbul neighbourhood banged pots and pans together on Thursday (March 27) night in a mark of solidarity for protesters angered by the arrest of the city's mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, on corruption charges.
People stood by their windows and made loud noises with the kitchenware as marching protesters passed through the area.
Imamoglu, President Tayyip Erdogan's biggest political rival who leads him in some polls, was jailed on Sunday (March 23), pending trial on corruption charges, which he denies.
Turkey's Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said 1,879 people had been detained since protests erupted last Wednesday (March 19) in response to Imamoglu's initial arrest, adding that courts jailed 260 pending trial.
He said that 489 were released and 662 others were still being processed, while 150 police officers were injured.
Rights groups called on Turkey to probe what they termed excessive force by police in dispersing crowds, and urged the government to allow the protests, which have been largely peaceful.
