Salvadorans marched on the country's capital on Thursday (March 27) to denounce the housing of detainees from the U.S. in the country's prison system.
Protesters spoke out against the country's "prison industry" and President Nayib Bukele's State of Emergency in El Salvador.
On March 15, Trump invoked the Alien Enemies Act to swiftly deport alleged members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua to El Salvador. The U.S. reportedly handed over 238 Venezuelans to be placed in the country's "Terrorism Confinement Center."
The housing of U.S. detainees comes amid a State of Emergency in the country. The measure was initially approved by Bukele’s government in 2022 to address the high levels of gang violence in the country. On March 4, the Assembly extended the measure for 30 more days, arguing its implementation has reduced homicide rates to 1.9 per 100,000 residents and resulted in the arrest of over 85,000 gang members.
But human rights groups have accused the government of mass detentions that breach human rights and undermine Salvadoran democracy under the measure.
