- Story Text: New tariffs on automotive imports into the United States announced on Wednesday (March 26) could change the relationship between Japan and its key ally, Tokyo residents feared on Thursday (March 27).
"Of course it's worrying, if the tariffs go up then things will get more expensive, there'll be inflation on both sides," 95 year-old former pharmacist, Sosuke Oba, told Reuters.
Shares in Japanese auto makers fell sharply in early trade on Thursday. Automobiles made up 28.3% of Japan's total exports to the United States in 2024, the biggest ratio among all items, according to data from Japan's Ministry of Finance.
U.S. President Donald Trump unveiled a 25% tariff on imported cars and light trucks starting next week, widening the global trade war he kicked off upon returning to the White House this year, in a move auto industry experts expect will drive up prices and stymie production.
