A mother gave birth at a hospital in Bangkok after tremors from a powerful earthquake in Myanmar rattled buildings and brought down a skyscraper in the city on Friday (28 March).
Kanthong Saenmuangshin, a 36-year-old mother, who had come in for a routine check-up went into labour shortly after the tremors began.
“The medical staff were holding both my arms as we made our way down the stairs (to evacuate),” said Kanthong, who was being treated on the fifth floor of the Police General Hospital. “I was telling my baby, don't come out yet. But the pain kept growing.”
She was put on a hospital bed and gave birth surrounded by staff. Kanthong said the earth stopped shaking when her baby girl was born.
While the newborn has not yet been given an official name, her nickname is 'Mink'. Her parents have decided against giving her a name related to the earthquake.
Friday's 7.7 magnitude quake, among the biggest to jolt Myanmar in the last century, sent tremors to various parts of Thailand including its capital city. A number of hospitals across Thailand were forced to evacuate.
