- Story Text: A powerful earthquake that rocked Southeast Asia is "capable of causing extreme damage," a seismologist said on Friday (March 28).
At least three people were killed in the town of Taungoo in Myanmar when a mosque partially collapsed, witnesses said, while local media reported that at least two people died and 20 were injured after a hotel collapsed in Aung Ban.
In Thailand, Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said there had been three deaths from the quake. He warned of possible aftershocks but urged people to be calm and said the situation was largely under contol.
"This is a very large earthquake. It's capable of causing extreme damage close to the epicentre, and it's likely to be felt further away,'' said Dr Brian Baptie, a seismologist at the British Geological Survey.
Myanmar's ruling military declared a state of emergency in multiple regions. The junta seized power in a 2021 coup that led to a civil war, and has been isolated internationally.
