- Story Text:Supporters of Turkey's main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) began gathering early Saturday (March 29) ahead of a mass rally against the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.
Imamoglu was detained on March 19 in relation to corruption allegations, sparking the largest anti-government protests in a decade that led to hundreds of arrests nationwide.
"My hope is that everything will get better. It will be better than this but (we need) patience," said Hande Aksoy, as she arrived outside the venue.
Authorities say some 1,879 people have been detained since the protests erupted and that courts jailed 260 of them pending trial. Rights groups have called on Turkey to probe what they termed excessive force by police in dispersing crowds.
The CHP has called on Turks to continue protesting, saying it would organise rallies and gatherings at different locations in Istanbul and elsewhere. Erdogan has dismissed the protests as a "show" and warned of legal consequences for protesters.
