- Story Text: Filipino activists and supporters of former President Rodrigo Duterte held separate protests on Friday (March 28) to mark his 80th birthday as the ex-leader remains in detention in The Hague.
Duterte is set to be the first Asian former head of state to go on trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC) after he was arrested and sent to The Hague, where he faces accusations of murder as a crime against humanity over a "war on drugs" that killed thousands of people and defined his 2016-2022 presidency.
In Manila, dozens of Filipino activists brought black balloons and asked for justice for those who were killed, while some of Duterte's supporters called for his release near a church.
In Duterte's hometown in Davao City, thousands of supporters chanted his name in a street protest and prayed for his release. Earlier on Friday, some supporters went to his home and sang a birthday song to a cardboard cutout in his image.
