- Story Text: Denmark’s King Frederik on Friday (March 28) spoke about his love for Greenland as the Arctic island is once again in the spotlight with U.S. Vice President Vance scheduled to visit later in the day.
Vance’s visit comes after U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday (March 26) reiterated his desire to take over Greenland.
“We live in a changed reality. But there should be no doubt that my love for Greenland and my connection to the Greenlandic people is intact,” King Frederik said during a visit to Vordingsborg in southern Denmark.
King Frederik X, who took the throne last year, is the head of state not only in Denmark but also in Greenland and the Faroe Islands, both sovereign territories in the kingdom.
He has spent extended periods of time in Greenland, including a four-month expedition on the ice sheet.
Vance is set to visit the U.S. military base at Pituffik in northern Greenland later on Friday. An earlier plan for his wife Usha to visit the capital Nuuk and a popular dog-sled race was called off amid local protests.
