- Story Text: Hatchlings of the endangered Olive Ridley turtle found a second chance at life on Friday (March 28) with ongoing conservation efforts in India's southern Tamil Nadu state.
Around 2,000 eggs were collected by the local forest department during the egg laying season, after which the eggs were incubated in a special hatchery.
"We receive 1500-2000 eggs laid by the Olive Ridley turtles and we are protecting it through our forest department and from other predators and stray animals," said a senior district official.
Rescued hatchlings, previously victims of bycatch by local fishing communities, also left their imprint on the sandy shores of Manapadu beach as they slowly disappeared into the waves.
Students from different schools cheered as the hatchlings were swept by the waves and finally made their abode in the deep blue sea. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
