- Story Text: Hundreds protested in Lima on Friday evening (March 28) demanding safety amid a growing wave of crimes, murders and extortions.
Protesters said the Congress and President Dina Boluarte were not doing enough to combat insecurity.
"The criminals, extortions, every day crimes have risen so much that citizens are afraid," protester Violeta Sermeno said.
Earlier in March, country's interior minister, Juan Jose Santivanez was ousted by the government for ‘inability to address the wave of citizen insecurity. Boluarte has also declared that she would like to see murderers face the death penalty, even though Peru only allows execution for those convicted of treason.
The number of homicides in Peru rose over 35% in 2024, from 1,508 in 2023 to 2,059 last year, according to the national agency that tracks deaths.
