Ecuadorean presidential hopefuls faced off in a TV debate on Sunday (March 23) ahead of the second-round presidential election on April 13, on questions that are at the top of the Andean country’s agenda, such as violence and migration.
Opposition candidate for the Alianza Revolucion Ciudadana-Movimiento Renovacion Total coalition, Luisa Gonzalez, and incumbent president and candidate for the Movimiento Accion Democratica Nacional, discussed education, healthcare, security, economy, and governance.
Noboa has declared a war on gangs as he tries to control violence with military presence on the streets and state of emergency declarations in dangerous areas. On Saturday, Noboa lamented the murder of a member of his party in an armed attack, according to Ecuadorean media.
Gonzalez, a protégé of former President Rafael Correa, got 43.98% of the vote in the first-round election, a close result to Noboa, who received 44.16% of the votes.
Ecuador had a homicide rate in 2024 of 38.7 per 100,000 citizens, slight drop from 2023, with 46.18, according to Ecuadorean media citing the National Police data.
