- Story Text:More resources are needed to battle wildfires raging in the southeastern part of South Korea, some residents said on Thursday (March 27), as the blazes doubled in size from a day earlier.
More than 33,000 hectares (81,544 acres) have been charred or were still burning in the largest of the fires that began in Uiseong county, making it the biggest single forest fire in South Korea's history. The previous record was 24,000 hectares (59,305 acres) in a March 2000 fire.
More than 10,000 firefighters were deployed in four separate areas on Wednesday (March 26), including hundreds of police officers and military units, while over 120 helicopters have been deployed, the Safety Ministry said.
Kim Jong-gun, a Forest Service spokesperson, said it planned to secure more wildfire-fighting helicopters, responding to criticism about a lack of equipment and helicopters.
