- Story Text:Palestinians in Gaza's Khan Younis prepared for Eid on Saturday (March 29) amidst Israel's resumption of an aerial and ground operation.
Kawthar Hussein Al-Omar, a displaced Palestinian originally from Rafah, bakes Eid cookies with her family, capturing a moment of tradition amidst adversity. Despite the festive preparations, Al-Omar voices the deep-seated fear and economic difficulties faced by her community.
She describes the anxiety that grips children during Eid, as they are reluctant to go outside due to the threat of strikes. The closure of crossings has exacerbated their struggles, leaving families unable to provide gifts for their children during the holiday.
Meanwhile, Nidal, another displaced Palestinian, highlights the resilience of Gazans, noting that despite the challenges, they adapt and find ways to celebrate occasions like Eid and Ramadan.
The bustling market scenes, with people checking socks and selling toys, contrast with the backdrop of destroyed buildings, illustrating the daily challenges faced by the residents.
Since Israeli airstrikes resumed on March 18, at least 855 Palestinians have been killed and 1,869 wounded, according to the U.N., which cited figures from the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry.
Israel and Hamas accused each other of breaching the truce. It had broadly held since January and offered respite from war for the 2.3 million inhabitants of Gaza, which has been reduced to rubble.
Hamas, which still holds 59 of the 250 or so hostages Israel says the group seized in its October 7, 2023 attack, accused Israel of jeopardising efforts by mediators to negotiate a permanent deal to end the fighting.
