- Story Text: US military personnel, Chinese technical experts and medical teams, joined Thai authorities on Saturday (March 29) in an intensive operation at the site of a collapsed 33-storey building in Bangkok, where dozens are feared trapped.
Cranes were seen lifting debris as rescue workers and trucks moved in and out of the restricted zone, while medics gathered at a mobile command post to prepare for potential lifesaving efforts.
“Once we detect vital signs or manage to reach someone trapped in the rubble, it becomes us, the medical team, to step in,” said Thailand’s director-general of medical service, Taweesin Visanuyothin.
Rescue efforts remain challenging as bringing in specialised equipment is difficult due to the building’s height and the many unpredictable conditions inside, said Liu Qiang, a Chinese engineer assisting at the site.
Friday's 7.7 magnitude quake, among the biggest to jolt the Southeast Asian nation in the last century, crippled airports, bridges and highways amid a civil war that has wrecked the economy and displaced millions.
