- Story Text:Thousands protested outside the Belgrade headquarters of a media outlet sympathetic to Serbia's government on Saturday (March 29) saying it was spreading lies about the country's student-led protest movement.
Protests have taken place regularly since 16 people were killed when a railway station roof collapsed on Nov. 1, which many attribute to rampant corruption under the decade-long leadership of President Aleksandar Vucic and his ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).
They also accuse Vucic and SNS of ties with organised crime, stifling media freedoms and violence against political opponents. Vucic and his allies deny that.
Protesters said they hoped more people in Serbia would hear their message and give them support. Initially led by students, teachers, farmers and other groups have joined the protests since the disaster in the northern city of Novi Sad.
Parliament speaker and former prime minister Ana Brnabic defended the outlet, Informer, in a post on X, saying "pressure and threats" against media was unacceptable.
