- Story Text: At least two people were injured and a building sustained significant damage in China's southwestern city of Ruili when strong tremors hit on Friday (March 28), state broadcaster CCTV reported, following deadly earthquake struck neighbouring Myanmar.
Ruili, a city in China's southwest Yunnan province bordering Myanmar, is situated around 500 kilometres (311 miles) north of the 7.7 magnitude earthquake's epicentre in neighbouring Myanmar's Sagaing region, with the much of the damage being centred in the city of Mandalay.
The death toll in Myanmar, as of Saturday (March 29), has climbed to 1,002, Myanmar's state-run MRTV has said, adding that 2,376 people were injured and 30 still missing.
Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke by phone with Myanmar's junta chief Min Aung Hlaing following the earthquake, China's embassy in Myanmar said on Saturday, adding that Xi expressed sympathy over the incident.
A 37-strong team from China landed in Yangon, Myanmar's former capital, early on Saturday, carrying medicine and equipment to detect signs of life with them, the Chinese embassy said.
