- Story Text:Turkish police took tight security measures around a venue where opposition supporters were gathering on Saturday (March 29) to protest against the arrest of dismissed Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.
Tens of thousands waving Turkish flags and carrying banners poured into the sea-front rally grounds at Maltepe on the Asian side of Istanbul for the "Freedom for Imamoglu" rally, organised by the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP).
Police blocked off several main roads in the area, with water cannon trucks and riot police stationed near the entrances to the venue.
Hundreds of thousands have heeded opposition calls and taken to the streets nationwide since Imamoglu was detained on March 19 and then jailed pending trial on corruption charges. Protests have been mostly peaceful but nearly 2,000 people have been detained.
