- Story Text: Democrats leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen, a 33-year-old former minister of industry and minerals, was sworn in as the youngest prime minister of Greenland on Friday (March 28) to face the challenges posed by U.S. President Donald Trump's ambitions to control the Arctic island.
Speaking shortly after officially becoming prime minister he said his government needed to engage in dialogue with the United States and Denmark.
“We need to have a dialogue with all of them. Without dialogue, we will solve absolutely nothing,” he said.
Nielsen was sworn in just hours before a visit by U.S. Vice President JD Vance to the Arctic island that Trump has expressed interest in acquiring.
Nielsen urged parties to set aside disagreements and form a broad coalition to show unity amid Trump's campaign to annex the semi-autonomous Danish territory.
The pro-business Democrats, which favour a slow independence from Denmark, emerged as the biggest party as it tripled its representation to 10 seats in a March 11 general election.
The coalition, which spans much of the political spectrum, represents 23 of the 31 parliamentary seats. The Naleraq party, a staunch pro-independence party that doubled its seats to eight in the election, will not be part of the coalition.
