- Story Text: LGBTQ community members held a pride march to mark 'International Transgender Day of Visibility' in India's northern Prayagraj city on Monday (March 31).
Hundreds of community members adorned in colourful attire, danced to the tunes of drums, as they chanted slogans demanding representation and equal rights.
"We should be given the same rights as other people, so that we can lead a normal life. Many members of our community fall victim to depression and anxiety because of the lack of rights," said a participant.
The Supreme Court decriminalised homosexuality in 2018 but greatly disappointed the LGBTQ+ community in 2023 when it declined to legalise same-sex marriage, leaving the matter to parliament to decide.
Same-sex ties are mostly taboo in the largely conservative country of 1.42 billion people. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
