- Story Text: Hundreds of Congolese Muslims prayed together at a stadium in Bukavu on Sunday (March 30), signaling their determination to sustain normalcy during the Eid al-Fitr holiday despite their town's ongoing occupation buy Rwandan-backed rebel forces.
Led by Sher Issa Ibrahim Magala of South Kivu's Islamic Community Leader, the assembly to mark the end of the month of Ramadan comes as the intensifying violence across eastern Congo compels many to modify their religious customs.
"Because of the security situation in our country, many of us have been praying at home," Magala said, referring to traditional evening prayers. Daytime prayers, typically held at mosques, have transitioned to safer locations as well.
Insecurity has also necessitated earlier prayer times, with most now concluding at 1830 instead of the standard 2100 prayer time.
