- Story Text: The search for four U.S Army soldiers continues in Lithuania after their armoured vehicle was found submerged in water at a training ground, the army said on Wednesday (March 26).
The military search and rescue operation has been ongoing since Tuesday (March 25) after four soldiers and their vehicle went missing at Pabrade training ground, about 15 kilometres from the border with Belarus.
Battalions of U.S. soldiers have been based in the military camp since 2019, in rotations.
Lithuanian Defence Minister Dovile Sakaliene, who visited the training site late on Wednesday, said no bodies had been found.
Search for the soldiers will be underway throughout the night, both U.S and Lithuanian armies said, with Lithuanian Chief of Defence Raimundas Vaiksnoras saying the rescuers are now looking into how fast the swampy location could be drained.
Lithuania has launched a pre-trial investigation into the disappearance of the soldiers.
The soldiers, all from 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, were conducting scheduled tactical training at the time of the incident, the U.S. Army said in an earlier statement.
