- Story Text: Local residents and officials mourned victims of wildfires on Friday (March 28) in South Korea’s eastern Yeongyang county, as authorities have contained the main blazes in the country's largest forest fires on record.
Spread by strong winds in bone-dry conditions, the wildfires have killed at least 28 people and charred more than 45,000 hectares (111,000 acres) across the country’s southeastern region.
Five of the victims were from North Gyeongsang province’s Yeongyang county, according to county governor, Oh Do-chang.
“(The victims) were completely isolated. Some residents died while having a meal, because their houses suddenly caught fire, and others died while moving to tell other residents that there was a fire”, said Governor of Yeongyang, Oh Do-chang, who declared a five day period of mourning for the wildfire victims.
A small memorial was constructed under tentage in an open field, attracting a continuous flow of mourners throughout the day.
