- Story Text: Crowds braved the unseasonably cool weather in Tokyo on Monday (March 31) to view the Japanese capital's cherry blossom trees in full bloom.
With light rain and the mercury only hitting a high of 8.9 C (48 F), according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, some people were left feeling short-changed.
"I've always been able to see the beautiful cherry blossoms under clear blue skies, but this year is the first time I've been so disappointed," said 77-year-old Michie Kakihana, who travelled from Saitama prefecture near Tokyo to view the blossoms along the Meguro river.
Visitors in the capital's Ueno Park were undeterred by the chilly weather, with many taking part in traditional "hanami" or "flower viewing" picnics under the trees.
