- Story Text: Spain's Bioparc Fuengirola welcomed the birth of an endangered Malayan tapir cub on Saturday (March 29), marking a key achievement in global conservation efforts for this threatened species.
The cub was born in the early hours of Saturday, after approximately a 13-month gestation period at the park in southern Spain. Both mother and calf are on quarantine period, with a dedicated nursing staff to monitor them, head of zoology Javier Vicent told Reuters.
This birth is among the 25 recorded in zoos worldwide in the past decade and the first in Spain, Vicent explained.
The head of zoology also said the Malayan tapir species, listed as endangered, has a global population of no more than 2,500, mainly because of habitat destruction.
While the calf's sex and weight are yet to be determined, it's estimated to weigh between 8 and 10 kilograms at birth, adhering to species standards. Bioparc will open a social media enquiry to determine the name of the cub.
