- Story Text:Spanish deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Diaz said on Monday (March 31) that the blast at a coal mine which killed five miners and injured four should not have happened in today's Spain.
Speaking at the site of the accident in Degana, in the northern Spanish region of Asturias, Diaz said that the government would take appropriate action, once the investigations are concluded, to avoid a repeat of the machine malfunction that is believed to have caused the incident.
The emergency services said the malfunction occured inside the Degana mine at 9:32 a.m. (0732 GMT) local time on Monday. Three helicopters and two ambulances were sent to the scene.
Regional leader Adrian Barbon declared two days of mourning and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed his condolences to the victims' relatives on social messaging platform X.
