- Story Text:Turkish students called on authorities to release their friends who were detained and jailed pending trial for attending mass protests after the arrest of dismissed Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.
A university student who was among hundreds of thousands of people attending a mass rally on Saturday (March 29) said his friends who were arrested had not committed a crime and were only protesting for justice.
Another student, who did not give her name for fear of repercussions, said those arrested were being kept in bad conditions and were subjected to bad treatment.
Hundreds of thousands of Turks nationwide have heeded opposition calls to protest since Imamoglu was detained last week and then jailed pending trial on graft charges. Protests have been mostly peaceful but nearly 2,000 people have been detained.
