- Story Text: The leader of Spain’s far-right Vox party, Santiago Abascal, on Monday (March 31) gave his support to French far-right leader Marine Le Pen’s after her conviction by a French by court posting a message on X saying “They will not succeed in silencing the voice of the French people” .
French far-right leader Marine Le Pen was banned for five years from holding public office after being convicted on Monday of embezzlement, almost certainly preventing her planned run for president in 2027.
In 2024 and 2025 Abascal and Le Pen met in Madrid during a Vox and Patriots rallies, along with other far-right leaders.
Abascal is among several politicians from party's on the right showing solidarity with Le Pen and condemning the court sentence as politically motivated on Monday.
Hungary's Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, posted a message on X saying simply, in French, "I am Marine".
Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesman, questioned the democratic process in European capitals, saying they "are going down the path of trampling over democratic norms," while Italy's Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini said Paris was seeking to exclude Le Pen from political life.
