- Story Text: StandWithUs, an NGO that says it supports Israel and fights antisemitism, held a protest on Sunday (July 6) at Rio de Janeiro’s Ipanema beach against what organizers said is the criminalization of same-sex relationships and the persecution of other minorities by Iran's government.
The protest came as Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi was in Rio participating in meetings of the BRICS group, of which Iran is a member.
LGBTQIA+ pride flags and nooses were placed on Rua Farme de Amoedo, an area known as a meeting point for the city's queer community,.
A banner reading “Iran kills gays in a public square” was placed in the sand.
An Amnesty International report on the state of the world's human rights released in 2025 reported that in Iran, during 2024, LGBTI people suffered systemic discrimination and violence.
