- Story Text: An analyst in Taiwan warned more drills around the island can be expected this year just as China carried out a fresh round of military exercise around the island's north, south and east coasts on Tuesday (April 1).
China said the drill is a "stern warning" against separatism. Unlike war games last year, the drill happened after a rise in Chinese rhetoric against Lai and follows on the heels of U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth's Asia visit, during which he repeatedly criticized Beijing.
Chen Yi-fan, assistant professor of Diplomacy and International Relations at Taiwan's Tamkang University said China is sending a 'strong message' to U.S Defence Secretary, adding that Trump's administration needs to have a sense of urgency with the developing situation in East Asia.
Chen added that the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) may use the drills as a 'good tactic' to rally local support ahead of domestic elections next year.
Taiwan's government condemned the drills, with the presidential office saying China was "widely recognized by the international community as a troublemaker" and that the government has the confidence and ability to defend itself.
Taiwan's government rejects Beijing's sovereignty claims, saying only the island's people can decide their future.
