- Story Text: Taiwan should “soften” its stance against China, some Taipei residents said on Wednesday (April 2), as Beijing continued to hold military drills around the island.
Taiwan should remain firm with regard to its position as its own entity, but the island does not need to “go head-to-head against them (China)," 45-year-old Liu Chia-Hung said.
China’s exercises follow a rise in Chinese rhetoric against Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, whom Beijing called a "parasite" on Tuesday (April 1), and come on the heels of U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's Asia visit, during which he repeatedly criticised China.
China views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory. Lai, who won election and took office last year, rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claims and says only Taiwan’s people can decide their future.
