- Story Text:Long lines of residents weaved through a makeshift campsite in quake-ravaged Mandalay on Tuesday (April 1), as they waited for food surrounded by the shattered remnants of their city.
Footage taken on Tuesday revealed a city in ruins, with buildings toppled and rubble-strewn streets, as people carrying plates waited in line for meals. Videos also showed Muslims gathering to worship at a makeshift prayer site in a rubble-strewn clearing near a mosque damaged in the earthquake.
Myanmar is struggling to recover after the 7.7-magnitude quake struck on Friday (March 28), the strongest to hit the Southeast Asian country in more than a century.
The quake toppled ancient pagodas and modern buildings alike and inflicted significant damage on Myanmar's second city Mandalay and Naypyitaw, the capital the previous junta purpose-built to be an impregnable fortress. At least 2,719 people have been killed.
