- Story Text: Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin scored his 895th career National Hockey League goal on Sunday (April 6), breaking the all-time record set by Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky.
Ovechkin scored during their away game at the New York Islanders to cut the home side's lead to 2-1.
When Gretzky retired in 1999, his 894-goal tally was 93 goals more than any player before him, making the record seem unassailable.
Born in Moscow in 1985 when Russia was still part of the Soviet Union, Ovechkin played for Dynamo Moscow before joining the NHL in 2005 following the 2004 draft, where he has been a stalwart of the Capitals.
