- Story Text: Spanish Rioja wine makers are worried about United States President Donald Trump's "liberation day" tariffs announcement expected on Wednesday (April 2) as their cellars are overflowing.
Trump's threat of levying crippling tariffs on European wine imports from Europe comes at a moment Rioja wineries are sitting on excess stocks of the famous red wine at a moment the world demand is dipping.
"There is wine accumulated since COVID-19, there's quite a bit of wine piled up, and in the end, that's a burden for the price. The wine cellars are full of wine, grapes, and everything. It's bad for the farmer," winegrower Enrique Lopez de Alda, 39, told Reuters.
Sales of Rioja, the most popular Spanish wine in its home country and abroad, had increased 0.6% in 2024 from the previous year according to La Rioja regulator council.
The U.S. market is the second export market for Rioja after Britain and sales there represent 4% of overall production.
"The United States is also a wine producer, but it can't supply its entire market," said Jorge Rodriguez, the co-owner of Petrolanda winery and bodega. Tariffs are "not good for them, nor for us, of course. But globally, in the end, everyone depends on everyone."
