  • Story Text: Taiwan's defence ministry said on Wednesday (April 2) it has not detected any Chinese live fire drills taking place in areas around the island, though it said China did so off the coast of the eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang.
    China's Eastern Theatre Command announced on Wednesday as part of the “Strait Thunder-2025A” exercise its ground forces had conducted long-range, live-fire drills into the waters of the East China Sea, though it did not give an exact location. The military was practising precision strikes on port and energy facilities, it added.
    During a Wednesday news conference, senior ranking officials from Taiwan’s defence ministry said 36 Chinese military aircraft had been detected so far on Wednesday, against 76 for the previous day.
    "No matter what the name(of the drills) is, it cannot cover up the stark-naked provocative nature of the drills and their mentality of threatening Taiwan's people," Taiwan defence ministry spokesperson Sun Li-fang told reporters in Taipei.
    China has not formally named Tuesday's drills, but called two rounds of major war games last year around the island Joint Sword-2024A and Joint Sword-2024B.
