- Story Text:Auto industry experts in India have said tariffs could bring an opportunity for the country to become "self-reliant" in manufacturing, following U.S. President Donald Trump's plans for new tariffs on auto imports.
"Perhaps this would push our OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and push our component manufacturers to become more competitive and start making products which are right now importing,” said C.S. Vigneshwar, President of the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).
The comments come ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump plans to impose sweeping new reciprocal tariffs on global trading partners on Wednesday, upending decades of rules-based trade, risking cost increases and likely drawing retaliation from all sides.
Details of the tariff plans, styled by Trump as America's "Liberation Day," were still being formulated ahead of a White House Rose Garden announcement ceremony scheduled for 4 p.m. Eastern Time (2000 GMT).
The new duties are due to take effect immediately after Trump announces them, while a separate 25% global tariff on auto imports will take effect on April 3.
Earlier in February, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi met U.S. President Donald Trump at Washington, where both sides showed intentions to discuss tariff and trade disagreements.
