- Story Text:Argentine President Javier Milei on Wednesday (April 2) reaffirmed the claim over the Malvinas Islands (Falkland Islands for the British) and defended the role of the country's armed forces in an act of homage for the ‘Day of the Veterans and the Fallen in the Malvinas War’, 43 years after the armed conflict with Britain.
Argentina continues to claim sovereignty over the islands, which it considers to have been usurped by Britain in 1833.
"I want to insist again on our unyielding claim for the Malvinas Islands, reinforcing the commitment to exhaust all diplomatic resources at our disposal so that they return to Argentine hands," Milei stated at the event.
On the other hand, the Argentine president reaffirmed the role of the armed forces in defending Argentine territory from external threats.
"Argentina needs robust armed forces. They are necessary to defend our vast territory from potential threats in a global context of increasing uncertainty," he said.
Since flights to the islands became available to Argentines in 1999, veterans and relatives have been visiting the graves of those who died during the war with Britain in 1982.
