- Story Text: Los Angeles tourists expressed their sadness on Wednesday (April 2) over the death at the age of 65 of actor Val Kilmer, who starred in films such as "Top Gun," "The Doors," "Tombstone" and "Batman Forever."
The actor's cause of death was pneumonia, the New York Times reported, citing his daughter Mercedes Kilmer. The actor had lived with poor health for years due to throat cancer.
"It was sad and he was a great actor who will go down as being one the best, I'm sure," said Cynthia Tenny, 68, from Rochester, New York.
"We're going to miss that guy. We're going miss him pretty good. Good movies, good action movies out there. He's going to be missed," said 50-year-old Sergio Hernandez.
Kilmer was born in Los Angeles and made his film debut in the 1984 spy spoof "Top Secret!" which won him legions of fans. He soared to fame as Tom Cruise's rival in the smash 1986 hit "Top Gun," playing naval aviator Tom "Iceman" Kazansky.
Kilmer played the role again alongside Cruise in the successful 2022 sequel "Top Gun: Maverick," though he could barely speak.
