- Story Text: An earthquake survivor on Wednesday (April 2) recounted the moment the Mandalay mosque he was in collapsed, claiming the lives of dozens of worshippers.
“At the time of the earthquake, all the people were gathered in the hall for Ramadan prayers, and the earth started to shake… the ceiling fell down on us and we were all trapped inside,” said Myo Lwin, who along with many others were performing Ramadan prayers at the mosque last Friday (March 28).
Myo Lwin traversed the ruined mosque, identifying the former entrance and prayer hall, now reduced to a massive pile of rubble and debris.
Hundreds of Muslims are feared among the dead in Myanmar after the shallow quake struck as worshippers gathered at mosques for Friday prayers in the holy month.
More than 50 mosques sustained damage, according to the shadow National Unity Government.
