- Story Text: As international rescuers rushed into Myanmar after last week’s devastating earthquake, a man finds himself searching on his own for his daughter who fell into the river when the bridge they were on collapsed during the quake.
“I am searching for her myself as there are no rescue operations here. I have to hire divers myself for the search,” said Tin, who did not want to be identified, as he went to the part of the river where only the wreckage of the bridge remained on Wednesday (April 2).
“I am struggling to pay them for the search but I have to do it myself. No one is here to help me,” Tin said, adding that he would pay 10 lakhs (USD200) should the divers find her body.
Although Tin says he feels that his daughter is alive, deep down inside he knows that she died when the bridge collapsed into the river below, and the hope now is just to find her body.
The death toll from last Friday’s (March 28) earthquake has surpassed 3,000, with hundreds more missing, as forecasts of unseasonal rain presented a new challenge for rescue and aid workers trying to reach people in a country riven by civil war.
