  • Story Text: The Australian cattle industry stood resolute on Thursday (April 3) after the U.S. announced a 10% tariff on Australian goods.
    In comments outside the White House, U.S. President Donald Trump singled out Australian beef, which saw a surge in exports to the United States last year, reaching A$4 billion ($2.51 billion) amid a slump in U.S. beef production. Cattle Australia Chair, Garry Edwards, said that U.S. consumers would pay the price for the tariffs on their burgers and steaks and that the short term impact on Australian farmers would be “very, very minimal”.
    Australia banned U.S. fresh beef products in 2003 due to the detection of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), otherwise known as mad cow disease, in U.S. cattle. BSE poses a risk to human health and has never been detected in cattle in Australia.
    Edwards said that there would be no compromise on Australia’s biosecurity laws, and that the U.S. has had access to the Australian market since 2019 for beef that was born, raised and slaughtered in the U.S.
