- Story Text: Mexican business leaders welcomed the country’s exemption from U.S. President Donald Trump’s 10% baseline tariff plan on Wednesday (April 2), but in the border city of Ciudad Juarez uncertainty remained over the prospect of further trade disruption.
The coordinator of the Border Business Bloc, Jesus Salayandia, said there was still concern over Trump's threats to dissolve the USMCA North-American free trade.
Business owners are also waiting to assess the impact of a 25% tariff on vehicle imports to the U.S., which is set to come into effect on May 3rd.
“Many laws need to be applied for this to be effective. Mainly regarding analysis of vehicles, their parts and their construction,” said Alejandro Sandoval, the President of the Mexican Institute of Finance Executives in Ciudad Juarez.
The notice said that for vehicles qualifying under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement's rules of origin, importers can pay the 25% duty on only the non-U.S. content of the order.
Last year, major Japanese carmakers such as Nissan and Toyota exported almost 880,000 vehicles to the United States from Mexico, according to data from Mexico's national statistics agency.
